Perrot State Park

Trempealeau County, Wisconsin

May 2011

Perrot State Park lies just outside the little river town of Trempealeau (pronounced "TRUMP-a-low") in western Wisconsin. Trempealeau is currently famous for two things - Trempeapeau Mountain (above) in Perrot State Park and the old-but-new Hotel Trempealeau. The name "Trempealeau Mountain" is a corruption of the French "La Montagne Qui Trempe a Leau" which means "the mountain whose foot is bathed by water".

This year I finally took my kayak along and explored the Mississippi backwaters upriver from the Park. This area is a wildlife refuge and home to lots of birds: bald eagles, white egrets, blue herons, not to mention the many migratory birds that pass through while following the Mississippi flyway.

On my return, the setting sun was at my back. It lit up the surrounding bluffs and turned the cliffs of exposed sandstone to gold. And since I was now drifting downriver, all I had to do was lean back and take it all in. Wow !

Here is a set of images invoking Springtime in Trempealeau...
